Khao Takiab Guide: The Vibrant Village & Weekend Market Hub
Just 4km south of Hua Hin center lies Khao Takiab (literally “Chopstick Hill”). If you want the convenience of the city but the relaxed vibe of a village, this is arguably the best place to stay in Hua Hin.
It is famous for three things: the temple on the hill with its resident monkeys, the best weekend night markets in the province, and its incredible “walkability.” Here is why Khao Takiab is the favorite zone for many returning European travelers.
(Cicada Night Market, Hua Hin is one of the most beautiful arts and crafts markets in Thailand.)
1. The "Green Songthaew" Hub: Easy Transport
One of the biggest perks of staying in Khao Takiab is the transport.
The Terminal: Khao Takiab is the final stop for the famous Green Songthaew (local open-air bus).
Convenience: You can hop on anywhere in the village and get a ride straight to Hua Hin Night Market or Market Village Mall for just 10-15 Baht. It runs every 15 minutes until late evening. You don’t need to rent a car if you stay here!

2. The Weekend Markets: Cicada & Tamarind
Khao Takiab comes alive on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.
Cicada Market: The most sophisticated market in Thailand. It’s all about art, handmade crafts, live theatre, and a clean, garden atmosphere. Perfect for a relaxed dinner and buying unique souvenirs.
Tamarind Market: Located right next to Cicada, this market is purely about Food & Live Music. It’s cheaper, louder, and packed with delicious local street food like Ribs, Pad Thai, and Seafood.
Why stay here? If you stay in Khao Takiab, you can walk to these markets. No need to fight for parking or pay expensive tuk-tuks.
(Like the Cicada Night Market, it is only open on weekends from Fri to Sun from about 5pm to 11pm and is a night market in the open air in a park-like area.)
3. Wat Khao Takiab (Monkey Mountain)
You can’t miss the giant golden standing Buddha facing the sea.
The Climb: Walk up the stairs to the temple at the top of the hill. The panoramic view of Hua Hin’s coastline is spectacular.
The Monkeys: Hundreds of macaques live here. They are fun to watch but keep your bags zipped and don’t carry food!
Chinese Temple: Below the hill (near the fishing pier), there is a beautiful Chinese temple with a giant Guan Yin statue.
4. The Beach & Water Sports
Khao Takiab beach is wide and flat, making it perfect for:
Activities: This is the best zone for Jet Skis and Banana Boats.
Horse Riding: A classic Hua Hin activity. You’ll find ponies ready to take you for a ride along the surf.
Beach Clubs: Several cool beach bars and restaurants line the shore, offering sunbeds and cold beers.
5. Where to Stay: Condos & Family Resorts
Khao Takiab is the capital of holiday condos and family-friendly resorts.
Condo Rentals: Places like Baan Peang Ploen, Baan Kiang Fah, or Amari Residences are very popular for monthly rentals. They offer resort-style pools and gyms.
Beachfront Resorts: From the luxury Hyatt Regency (home to the Barai Spa) to smaller boutique hotels like Kundala, there is something for every budget.
Is Khao Takiab Right For You?
YES if you want to be near the best weekend markets, want easy/cheap transport into town (Songthaew), and enjoy a lively village atmosphere with plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance.
NO if you are afraid of monkeys (just avoid the hill!) or want absolute silence (it can get busy on weekends).
